DENVER
Denver, our new adoptive town. I had come to Denver twice before. Once in 2006, with 18 months old Emilie, right after a winter storm. I had a job down in Santa Fe, Mexico, and Galo, Emilie and I drove up to Denver to visit Gabi for Christmas for a couple of days. I remember dropping my rental car downtown Denver and walking back all the way to Kalamath St and 1st ave by foot in the snow. An epic walk!
The second time we came to Denver to visit Gabi was in 2009, with 4 month-old Zoila. We came from San Francisco by train. The trip was beautiful but very long with a little baby! But it was summer this time and it was really nice to be hot for a week in the middle of a too fresh San Francisco summer. We biked with the girls in trailers, ate yummy food, went and swim at the Confluence.
I never thought then that this city would one day become a hometown.
We arrived in July 2015, in the summer, during warm weather. I loved it! We got to go to the thrift store and buy summer clothes. We had lived in the high Andes for the past 5 months where the temperature rarely raises above 70. So being finally free to wear light clothes reminded us of our time in the Islands. Even the evenings and nights were warm! The dream!
Denver is a really nice city in summer. There are many outdoor swimming pools and parks where we can go to. Denver is home to many cool museums and fun places for kids to go and explore.
Then came our first Autumn and we enjoyed the change in the weather with beautiful colored trees and falling leaves. We celebrated Halloween and had our first snow storm on Thanksgiving day.
Winter arrived and we got busy getting ready for the cold. Many trips to the thrift store to get boots and winter gears. We had our first Christmas in Denver with special guests from France, my cousin Kim and his partner Suzanne. We went to the ice rink downtown several times and the kids learned to skate for the first time. We didn't get to go to the mountains to ski because we don't have a car and it's way too expensive, but we were able to send the girls to a couple of all day ski trips with our recreation centers, so they could at least get a taste of this fun winter activity. Antonio was still too young to attend these trips even though he can't wait to learn how to snowboard!
Finally Winter faded away and let Spring set up...too slowly for my taste. After a few months of snow and cold, I was so ready for warmer days to come back. We celebrated Zoila's first birthday in Denver in the middle of a Spring snow storm. But then by the end of May and June, long and warm days were back to the joy of all. And another cycle started again.
Today we are starting our third Autumn and the excitement of the changes of the seasons has faded a bit. I am not looking forward to colder and snowy days. But we will still try to enjoy the seasons as much as possible!
Denver is a great city and we are lucky to have found each others!
